Our History
In 2000, University Park exhibited many of the problems that plague perimeter neighborhoods which surround urban universities: median household income was half that of all city residents; many households were living below the poverty level; homeownership rates had fallen; and the area accounted for a disproportionate amount of reported crime.
While many took note of this community condition, it was the leaders of our proud institutions who took action.
University Park Alliance was created to begin addressing these problems. We are a partnership that includes The University of Akron, City of Akron, Summa Health System, Akron Beacon Journal, Akron Children's Hospital, Akron General Health System, Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority, Greater Akron Chamber, Akron Public Schools, and the University Park residential and business community with major funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
