AKRON: City Council this week approved plans for a new rehabilitation facility at Akron City Hospital campus.
The 60-bed, $20 million hospital will be geared toward patients recovering from strokes, spinal cord injuries, orthopedic surgery and other conditions.
When it opens next year, Summa Health System will consolidate its inpatient rehab units from City, Barberton and Wadsworth-Rittman hospitals at the new facility.
The three-story facility will be built at the northeast corner of East Market Street and North Adams Street, providing a gateway to the City Hospital campus.
The new center will put Summa in direct competition with crosstown rival Akron General Health System, which owns Edwin Shaw Rehabilitation Institute.
